What impact does SB1383 have on climate change?

If you’re concerned about climate change, you’ve probably heard a lot about carbon dioxide—but what about methane? It’s actually one of the most powerful greenhouse gases out there, and California’s SB 1383 is tackling it head-on.

So, what is SB 1383?

This legislation is California’s bold move to slash methane emissions by reducing the amount of organic waste sent to landfills and increasing food recovery efforts. It’s a major shift that’s already having a real impact—not just on the environment, but on communities, too.

Let’s talk methane.

Methane is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. In California, about 20% of methane emissions come from organic waste breaking down in landfills. That’s huge. Landfills are the third-largest source of methane in the state, and SB 1383 is aiming to change that by diverting 75% of organic waste from landfills by 2025. That’s the climate pollution equivalent of removing 3 million cars from the road every year.

Food isn’t just going to waste—it’s going to people.

SB 1383 doesn’t just focus on waste diversion; it also prioritizes food recovery. By 2025, at least 20% of surplus edible food must be recovered for human consumption. In 2023 alone, over 200,000 tons of unsold food were redistributed to people who needed it. That’s a powerful intersection of environmental impact and social good.

Composting and clean energy? Yes, please.

Instead of letting food waste rot in landfills, SB 1383 supports turning it into compost or clean energy through anaerobic digestion. These processes prevent methane from forming and put waste to work in more sustainable ways.

A climate strategy that addresses extreme weather.

By targeting methane—a short-lived but super-potent climate pollutant—SB 1383 helps slow down the kind of extreme weather events we’re seeing more often: intense droughts, wildfires, and heat waves.

In short:

SB 1383 isn’t just waste legislation—it’s climate action. It’s a framework that connects environmental responsibility with food access, clean energy, and community resilience. As someone who works with this legislation regularly, I’ve seen its ripple effects across industries and neighborhoods. It’s proof that smart policy can drive powerful change.
